AFC

1. What does AFC stand for?

American Football Conference

AFC is an acronym for the Atlantic Football Conference. It is one of the two conferences (along with the NFC) that make up the NFL, the most popular sporting organization in the United States.

The AFC and NFC function similar to the AL and NL leagues in MLB. The conference contains 16 of the 32 football teams, the NFC holds the other 16 teams. It was created in 1970 and consists of the East, West, North, and South divisions. The winner of the conference plays the winner of the NFC in the Super Bowl in the playoffs to crown the champion.

Example

2. What does AFC stand for in online chat?

Away from computer

On rare occasions, your friends or co-workers might use AFC to say they're currently "away from computer." While you're not likely to encounter this acronym at all, you're most likely to come across it in an Away message, telling you that someone is not available to chat rn.

In most instances, however, those who are away from their computers instead use AFK (away from keyboard) to say so. AFK is such accepted shorthand for "not at my computer" that anyone who uses AFC instead likely doesn't know that AFK exists. (If that's the case, you should probably tell them about it.)

Example

Hey, r u there?
AFC until 1 pm. Leave a message
AFC can stand for "away from computer"

3. What does AFC stand for in online gaming?

Away from controller

A gamer who tells you they're "going AFC" is setting down their controller and stepping away to take care of some IRL business. This acronym is a variant of the more-popular AFK, used only when playing a video game with a controller (on either a PC or gaming console).

Most likely, the player who sent you AFC will be back at their controller within a short period of time. (If you're lucky, they may have even said how long they'll be away.) In the meantime, you may want to go touch grass yourself.

AFC for a min ... brb
