AOE

What does AOE stand for in gaming?

Area of effect

AOE (area of effect) abilities affect all targets within a particular (usually circular) area. Typically, AOE abilities target a spot on the ground, and their effects radiate out from that spot. However, some AOE abilities target a character and radiate out from that character.

Most AOE abilities are either:

  • Damage over time (DOT) attacks
  • Debuffs
  • Buffs
  • Or some combination of the three

For example, a character's AOE ice spell may both damage and slow enemies until they leave its radius.
