What does derail mean?

To take a discussion off topic

Derail is when a person takes a discussion thread off topic. It commonly occurs in forums and on message boards.

The term is often used in reference to forum posters who intentionally or unintentionally post something that distracts from the focus of the forum topic. It is closely associated with trolling when done intentionally. It comes from when trains derail off their tracks and crash.

Don't pay attention to Luke. His sole purpose in this forum is to derail discussions to make people mad
