DP

DP is a baseball acronym for double play, which is a play where two outs are recorded. It is similar to the putout term, which is when one out is recorded and the triple play term, which is when three outs are recorded.

The term is often used in baseball and softball to refer to a grounder or line drive fielded by an infielder, who throws it to a teammate standing on a base for a force-out, who then relays the throw to another teammate standing on a base for the second force out. There are a variety of double plays that can happen in baseball and softball, such as when a player is thrown out trying to advance to the next base after the fielder catches the ball, or when a hitter strikes out and a runner is thrown out while stealing a base.

Wives, husbands, GFs, and BFs may use DP to mean "dear partner." This acronym is a gender- and institution-neutral version of DH and DW.

Most often, partners use DP to begin long chat, text, or email messages to each other. For example, those in an LDR may begin their regular messages to their partner this way.

Less commonly, a member of a relationship may use DP to refer to their partner when talking with others. For example, your in-a-relationship friend might send a message that says "My DP is cooking dinner tonight ... aren't they sweet?"
