Set The Table

What does set the table mean?

To get on base so other hitters can score the baserunners

A baseball phrase that refers to hitters getting on base so other hitters can hit them in to home and score.

When you set the table you put other hitters in a great position to score you and get RBIs. A table setter tries to get on base any way he can, whether it be through a hit, walk, or error, so hitters with more power can score him. Table setters are often leadoff or No. 2 hitters because they can get on base for the No. 3 and 4 hitters, which are usually the best on the team.

Example

They set the table perfectly for Ramirez to hit that grand slam
