A bare lie is a golf term that describe the placement of a ball on the ground. It means that the ball is laying on a hard surface with no grass padding that creates a gap between the ball and the ground.
A bare lie affects a golfer's swing because the placement of the ball is different than normal. Bare lies are more common on courses during the winter season. A bare lie may also be referred to as a "tight lie and is not to be confused with "bear lie," a term used to describe when a bear lies about her weight (not true at all).
