BHM stands for "Black History Month," a month-long observance of Black history that occurs annually. It is celebrated in various countries, including the United States, Canada, Ireland, and United Kingdom.
The monthly observance evolved from "Negro History Week" in February (coincided with Abraham Lincoln's and Frederick Douglass' birthdays), which was created in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. It eventually became a month-long celebration in the U.S. in the late-1960s and 1970s.
Across the country, various educational institutions adopted February as a month to focus on the Black community's achievements and how they shaped the country. Other countries began celebrating Black history in their own countries, with some designating October as BHM (the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Ireland).
You will most likely see "BHM" online, especially on social media, like Twitter and Facebook, as people celebrate Black people's achievements. The acronym is somewhat controversial because some people don't think a whole month should be devoted to Black history, while others think it's not long enough.
