Bi

What is bi short for?

Bisexual

When discussing sexual or romantic attraction, people may use "bi" instead of "bisexual." The bi orientation means they are attracted to two different gender identities, such as male, female, non-binary, genderqueer, etc.

What makes being bi different than being pan?

While bi people are typically attracted to only people who identify as male or female, pan (short for pansexual) people may be attracted to people of any and all genders. In fact, pan people sometimes refer to themselves as being gender-blind, because sex and gender do not affect their sexual and romantic preferences.

However, the above is a generalization. In reality, being bi can include much more nuance. For example, in recent years, some bi people have sought to broaden the concept of bisexuality, to indicate that the word denotes an attraction to at least but not only two genders.
