What does code 9 mean when texting?

Code 9 means "Parents are here," which is used to notify the recipient that the sender's parents are in the vicinity and may be able to see their conversation. It is most often seen in text messages.

The alert is typically used by teenagers that are talking about something their parents do not approve of and don't want to be caught. Code 9 conversation topics include drug and alcohol use, sexual activity, and sneaking out past curfew. The alert may also appear as CD9 and 9.
