Earmuffs is a term used to tell a person to cover his ears when something profane or secretive is about to be said. The term comes from how earmuffs muzzle sound when placed on your ears, making it hard for you to hear noises.
Earmuffs is a way to protect a young child or sensitive adult from hearing something that might scar them or teach them bad manners. The term was made popular by the movie Old School, when Vince Vaughn's character would exclaim "Earmuffs" to his son when a bad word was about to be said out loud.
