Frenemy

What is a frenemy?

A person you dislike but are friendly with

If you dislike a person but still frequently socialize with them, that person is your frenemy. This portmanteau of "friend" and "enemy" is used to describe the complex relationship people have with co-workers, acquaintances, and even family members they cannot stand.

Usually, people attempt to avoid their frenemies as much as possible, but are by necessity pushed into conversations or collaborations with those people. In many cases, frenemies have a common goal (achieving success at a company, socializing with the same people) but incredibly different mindsets and personalities. Those differences put frenemies at odds with one another, even though they may want the same thing(s).

Example

"I'd have to say my relationship with Aaron is more frenemy than enemy. We get along fine in short doses, and I know he means well."
