|Meaning||First nine holes of an 18-hole golf course|
Front nine refers to holes 1 through 9 of an 18-hole golf course. It is followed by the "back nine," which refers to holes 10 through 18.
18-hole golf courses are commonly divided into two halves by broadcasts as they display the scores. This is where the front nine and back nine phrases come into play. The front nine is also known as "heading out" from the clubhouse. If you are only playing on a 9-hole golf course the front nine phrase would not be used.
"He shot par on the front nine but fell apart after that."
