Gloomer

What is a gloomer?

An apathetic 20-something

A gloomer is a 20-something who has no real life goals or ambition but carries on carrying on. Gloomers are not as well-adjusted and optimistic as bloomers, but they are also not as defeatist and depressed as doomers.

Where did gloomer originate?

In response to the doomer meme, an anonymous 4chan user posted an image of a Wojak-style character referred to as a gloomer. The original gloomer character was a 27-year-old female who "work[s] too much at [a] mediocre job ... hates it ..." and "doesn't talk about anything anymore." 4chan being 4chan, a male version of the character soon appeared.

The gloomer meme is not as popular as the doomer and bloomer memes, and you are actually more likely to encounter the word gloomer than a gloomer character. An alternative gloomer character, who is depicted wearing all black and staring intensely at a computer screen, appeared on Instagram in 2019. (You can see a picture of this character below.)

How are gloomers different than doomers?

While doomers and gloomers are both apathetic pessimists, gloomers do not always let their pessimism get the best of them. For example, gloomers take better care of themselves than doomers do, because they still value themselves and/or other people's opinions. The line between doomer and gloomer is thin, but it mostly involves maintaining some amount of hope that a person's actions ultimately matter.

Example

"I feel like Chuck's slowly crossing the line from gloomer to doomer. We might want to take them out to do something fun soon?"
