Hype

What does it mean when something is hype?

Awesome

When something is "hype," it is exceptionally cool or awesome. It may be an event (like a concert), a movie, song, character, etc.

While hype is most commonly associated with excitement (e.g., "I'm hyped to be at the club" or "Is this athlete worth the hype?"), the use of hype as an adjective (e.g., "This car is hype" or "Your beats are hype") became popular in 2020 and continued into 2021. Unfortunately, there is no clear origin for the term to look back at where it turned from being used as a verb to an adjective.

Teenagers and young adults are most likely to utilize the slang term. They may use it in person, online, and in text messages like the "fire" term when excited about the coolness of something.
