Initiating is a DOTA video game term that refers to when a hero attacks a group of enemies to start a team fight. The goal of initiating is to gain an advantage for the hero's team against the enemy's team right before they fight.

Initiators are vital for winning team fights, especially in the mid- and late-game phase of DOTA. Heroes that specialize in initiation are Sand King, Enigma, Axe, Vengeful Spirit, Earthshaker, Clockwerk, and Tidehunter.
