What does james joyce mean?

Putt that is hard to read

A James Joyce is a golf term for a putt on a green that is hard to read. It comes from the challenging literature authored by James Joyce, an Irish novelist and poet in the twentieth century.

The green on the course is often the most challenging part of golf as it is made up of different slopes. A golfer and his or her caddy have to examine and decide how hard to hit the ball and where to hit the ball so it can ride the elevation changes to the hole.
