Layby

What does layby mean?

Flirting with a person when in a relationship

Layby is when a person in a rocky relationship flirts with someone. It is commonly done in order to supply a distraction or a backup in case the complicated relationship dissolves.

The tuning is done in increments, almost like regular payments, in order to build up equity with someone as a second option. It could be considered emotionally cheating but is attempted to be done subtly enough where his or her SO wouldn't suspect anything. This type of flirting occurs almost entirely on a phone.

Example

She put me on layby as she and her bf began to split
That must be frustrating but hopefully it's worth it
