Leadoff

Meaning

First batter in the lineup

A baseball term that refers to the first hitter in the lineup.

The leadoff hitter is usually the player on the team that can get on base most often and is fast. He most likely isn't that powerful either or he'd be batting in 3rd, 4th, or 5th in the lineup in order to hit in runs. The leadoff hitter is sometimes called the "table setter" as he can get on base in order for other hitters to score him.

Example

"He should be taken out of leadoff as he has struggled so much to get on base."
