Love Bombing

What does love bombing mean?

Bombarding someone with acts of adoration

Love bombing is when a person overwhelms someone with a barrage of flattering acts. The love bomber may do it out of sincere love, or they may employ it as a toxic tactic to manipulate a partner.

Love bombing is nothing new; it's been performed as long as infatuation has existed on earth. The term was created in the 1970s by members of the Unification Church of the United States and also made popular in the 1990s by Margaret Singer, a Psychology professor who detailed how cults "love bomb" potential members.

Media, especially rom coms, have contributed to the popularization of love bombing. In rom coms, love bombing is depicted in various ways on grand and small scales that include sending flowers, leaving adoring notes or DMs, and standing on a table in front of peers professing love.

While it is often romantically endearing due to its intoxicating effect of being adored, it can also signify that you are being manipulated. Oftentimes, a love bomber abruptly ends the love bombing, leading the love-bombed individual to be submissive towards the partner to re-capture that feeling.

Example

"Tiff broke up with Paul after she realized he was love bombing her for the past 6 months."
