NUMTOTS

What does NUMTOTS mean on Facebook?

New Urbanist Memes for Transit-oriented Teens

The NUMTOTS Facebook group is a page where millennials and zoomers with a passion for public transit gather to share memes and engage in earnest policy discussions. The NUMTOTS, or New Urbanist Memes for Transit-oriented Teens, group is also active on other social media platforms, including Instagram and Twitter.

Members of the NUMTOTS group often identify themselves as Numtots. In Numtots' ideal future, clean, accessible public transit would be funded by taxes on billionaires, and gas-powered automobiles would be relics of a bizarre, bygone age. To achieve this future, Numtos post dank memes to social media platforms and (more productively) organize to advocate for better urban planning and public transit.

Then-college students Juliet Eldred, Emily Orenstein, and Jonathan Marty created the NUMTOTS Facebook group in 2017. As of 2020, the group had over 216,000 members. The group's demographics skew younger, likely because younger people are more likely to be interested in combating climate change, fixing public transit, and inciting an urban revolution via memes.
