A sharent is a parent that shares a lot about his or her child on social media, often embarrassing the son or daughter. The name comes from the combination of "share" and "parent."
As most parents would admit, they get a sadistic pleasure out of embarrassing their offspring, especially when the kids are teenagers and young adults. Even parents that don't intentionally mean to embarrass their kids have a special knack for humiliating them.
So when social media is added to this age-old tradition, the humiliation may leap from small social circles to hundreds, thousands, or millions (if the embarrassing post goes viral) of strangers. "Sharenting" often occurs on sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok.
The "sharent" label became popular in the late-2010s. Common examples of sharenting include posting baby pictures (often naked in a bathtub), sharing embarrassing childhood stories, or posting awkward videos from when the tween was going through puberty.
