Sus

What is sus short for?

Suspicious

When you're discussing shady characters and dirty deeds, sus is short for "suspicious." This abbreviation enjoyed a renaissance in 2020, when the video game Among Us spiked in popularity and added sus to many gamers' lexicons.

In Among Us, players take on the role of either a Crewmate, who must work with other Crewmates to survive in space, or an Imposter, who is attempting to kill all the Crewmates. At certain points in the game, the crew deliberates in an attempt to identify the Imposters among them. During these deliberations, players often accuse each other of acting sus.

While sus is now most notably tied to Among Us, it was previously associated with much darker subject matter. In the 1970s and 80s, a discriminatorily-enforced British stop and search law was referred to as the "Sus Law," during a successful campaign to get the law repealed. This campaign led to sus entering the vernacular of Black people and other groups who had been disproportionately targeted by the Sus Law.

Example

"I saw Red in that room twice, just standing there ... pretty sus."

MFW you're acting sus
