A baseball slang term that refers to a curve ball.
The pitch is meant to curve away from the batter as it comes closer. The exact origin is unclear but some speculate that the curved appearance of the "U" and "C" letters helped influence the name. The use of the term can authoritatively be dated back to a 1935 column written by Walter Winchell that appeared in the Havana Evening Telegram. The term is also known as "Sir Charles" and "Lord Charles."
