VSRE

What does VSRE stand for?

Very short reply expected

In emails, VSRE stands for "very short reply expected." If someone sends you an email that starts or ends with VSRE, they expect a short reply from you, likely answering a simple question.

The VSRE acronym was coined by Panayotis Vryonis, the author of the blog Vrypan. In a post on April 21, 2013, Vryonis laid out the rules for how and when to use VSRE in emails. Notably, VSRE should be used only in emails that contain simple questions, which can be answered in replies of five words or less.

When used correctly, VSRE benefits both reply authors and recipients. Authors can reply to VSRE emails quickly, without worrying about politeness or formality, and recipients can read and note VSRE responses just as fast.
