WAGs

What are WAGs in sports?

Wives and girlfriends

WAGs is short for "wives and girlfriends." Most often, it's used to refer to the wives and girlfriends of famous sports players - especially English soccer players.

Origin of WAGs

British media began referring to the wives and girlfriends of famous footballers as WAGs in the early-to-mid 2000s. The first use of the term likely occurred in 2002, but it rose to prominence during the 2006 World Cup, when the media often used WAGs to refer to Victoria Beckham (wife of David Beckham), Cheryl Cole (now Cheryl Ann Tweedy, former wife of Ashley Cole), and other notable footballers' paramours.

Criticism of WAGs

Many have criticized WAGs for being sexist and dismissive of women's individuality and accomplishments. For example, many of the women that sports media refers to as simply "wives and girlfriends" are just as (or more) famous than their HABs. Using WAGs, these critics argue, reduces these women to being only an extension of their SOs.
