A cup refers to a hole on a golf course. It comes from the cup-like insert placed inside the hole to catch the ball.
Golf cups are used for indoor and outdoor courses. They allow flags to be placed in them and are designed to allow water to drain through its holes so it doesn't collect. Also, they make a great sound when the ball falls into them.
