A person vying for membership in a sorority or fraternity is a "PNM." The candidate typically goes through a process that includes identification from members, application, and active recruitment (sometimes referred to as "rush").
Students in college fraternities and sororities (and former members) are the most likely to use the term, whether it be in person or online. Depending on the sorority's or fraternity's seriousness, they may rigorously surveil a PNM during the recruitment process.
For example, they may follow a PNM on social media to check the content they post and their support of the organization. They may also have standards for attractiveness and intelligence (GPA level).
Bama Rush PNMs
People may also use PNMs who follow the real-life drama on social media of college students looking for inductions into fraternities and sororities. One of the most notable instances is known as "Bama Rush" (University of Alabama sorority rush), which spawned an HBO documentary of the same name (Bama Rush).
