Review Bombing

What is review bombing?

Blasting a movie or show with negative reviews

Review bombing is when people leave many negative reviews about a movie or show to decrease its overall rating. The bombing typically involves many users but may also be performed by a small number of users with many accounts.

The review bombing tactic goes back to the 2000s when review aggregator sites like IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, and Metacritic gained prominence online. Even if a movie or show is good, Netizens may disagree with an aspect of the content (political or religious reasons, lore-blasphemy, or another type of protest) and bomb it on an aggregator site to decrease its overall score.

For example, if conservative fans of a TV show think it has become too woke, they might band together to bomb its reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. This tactic results in a meager audience score and is particularly noticeable when it contrasts with critics' reviews.

What are some examples of review bombing?

Some famous examples of review bombing include Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Spore, Grand Theft Auto V, and Ghostbusters (2016). Users may also review bomb other things besides films and shows, like apps, businesses, items for sale, and food.
