Texas Leaguer

Meaning

Weak fly ball hit to the outfield

A term used in baseball to refer to a weakly hit ball that lands in the outfield between the infielder and outfielder for a hit.

The term originated from the late 1800s in a Texas League, which is now a Double-A minor league, when players would regularly get on base through dinky hits to the outfield. This kind of hit infuriates pitcher because the batter gets on base through a poorly hit ball. A Texas Leaguer is the same as a bloop single.

Example

"He drops in a texas leaguer to right for his third hit of the game."
